She’s the best Union spy and he is a Confederate officer, thrown together during a war where love stands little chance of winning, except by an unconditional surrender….
Unconditional Surrender
Confederate Major Charles Silvers has had enough war. After two years of fighting, his view of a glorious Southern victory over the North has lost its luster and been replaced by a burning desire to return home to Virginia and life as it used to be, before the war. When he meets Sarah Lawrence during the siege on Vicksburg, Mississippi, he is convinced the blond-haired beauty could fill the void in his life—but what he does not know is that this Southern belle isn’t what she appears to be…
Tortured by memories of the night in 1860 when masked bushwackers torched her Mississippi home and killed her father, Sarah escaped the South. Now, however, she’s back and seeking revenge. As one of the best spies in the Union Army, she’s in a unique position to get her wish. For her, a Confederate Major, even a devastatingly handsome one, is just the tool to obtain the information the Union needs—even at the cost of her heart.
Loved this book! The plot offers the perfect conflict between Southern folk–one, the heroine, who is fighting on behalf of the Union, and the hero, who’s an officer in the Confederate Army.

An Excerpt from the Book

Take an inside look at Unconditional Surrender. Read this sizzling excerpt from the book.
Charles wiped his lips with the linen napkin, placing it on the table as he pushed his chair back. “The meal was greatly appreciated. But, if you’ll excuse us, we do have to continue.” He held his hand out to Sarah.
As she placed her hand in his and rose, she saw through the window behind him the pinking sky outside. Sunset. A lump formed in her throat, one she desperately tried to swallow as ice raced down her spine.
Night was coming, and all the demons would be loose.
“Major, please.” Kavanaugh sat back in his chair. “To take a lady into the hazards of the night in this area is not a good choice. I invite you to stay here. There are more than enough bedrooms upstairs, and we will catch up with the general tomorrow, I am sure.”
Charles’s grip tightened. “While we appreciate the offer, I believe we must move on. I must get my darling wife to safety.”
This time, the Irishman stood. “All the more reason to stay. We are safe here. My man Bentley will keep an eye out for any mischief. And I assure you, General Johnston will arrive.”
“How can you be so sure, sir?” Charles challenged.
With that, all fear of the growing darkness dissipated. Sarah wanted to know as well.
“I have received word. He will meet us tomorrow.”
As a spy, opportunity here blossomed with each hour. Her mind raced. One thing was certain: she needed more information, but she remained firmly quiet, like a good Southern belle. Ladies were not supposed to be versed in politics or the war. Many she knew had more knowledge than men ever gave them credit for.
Charles frowned. “Sir, General Johnston is very high in command. I fail to see how he could take time from the war to ride here for a meeting with a foreign visiting politician.” He was gripping the back of the chair, his knuckles turning white. “If you wanted to view the workings of this conflict, why are you not with General Pemberton at Vicksburg? Or General Forrest, or Lee, or a multitude of others? Why here, in Mississippi?”
The politeness that had cloaked the evening came to an icy halt with the anger in Charles’s voice. His demeanor took on the edge of civility mixed with the animosity of frustration and futility.
Kavanaugh, though, did not react right away, aside from sitting straighter and toying absently with his cuffs.
“Major, I am well aware that you’ve been a loyal soldier to your cause. Your country can be proud to have you as her defender. Yet strong will and abilities, at this point, are not the winners. The Confederacy needs help, needs recognition by the queen of England and the rest of Europe. Other methods must be taken to pursue the win and gain the long-term right to be a nation.” He scooted his chair back. “Come, let me show you why I know your general will make it here.”

Silk on the skin—luxurious, luscious…lethal.

London-Fall, 1888

The city is in a panic as Jack the Ripper continues his murderous spree. While the Whitechapel police struggle to find him, Detective Inspector Rudyard Bloodstone and his partner are working feverishly to find their own serial killer. The British Museum’s beautiful gardens have become a killing ground for young women strangled as they stroll through.

Their investigation has them brushing up against Viscount Everhard, a powerful member of the House of Lords, and a friend to Queen Victoria. When the circumstantial evidence  points to him as a suspect, Rudyard must deal with the political blowback, and knows if they are going to go after the viscount, they’d better be right and have proof.

As the body count grows and the public clamor for the detectives to do more, inter-department rivalries complicate the already difficult case.

Excerpt

Events of the day and the potential satisfaction of giving Napier a bloody nose dwindled. Questions about the murder crept back into Ruddy’s thoughts. Morris joined him at his table in the rear of the pub with a Guinness, the popular beer of choice in hand. “You’ve got the look of a man whose thoughts are a long distance from London.”

“No, sadly my thoughts are fixed here in the city. I’m trying to figure out a clue. Ellis’s roommate said she’d sometimes meet with a well-dressed man, a man of means the victim indicated. They’d meet up at the fountain by the British Museum.”

“Don’t know the spot but then the museum isn’t my cup of tea.”

“Not the point. I’m saying it’s odd. What member of the upper class chooses to stroll through a public garden other than Hyde or Regents, where they can see and be seen by one of their own?”

“I agree the wealthy prefer the parks filled with others of their kind but it doesn’t mean a man can’t enjoy someplace different.”

“We interviewed the guard again. The one that discovered the body walks that half of the building. He told us the majority of their male patrons are natty dressers, but he never saw a man like that loitering by the fountain.”

“My guess is: the man is married and can’t afford to run the risk of being seen by a friend of his wife’s. Or, he might live or work in the area and the spot is convenient.”

“Or, he’s a murderer who’s noticed the victim walking through the park on a regular basis, saw it as an opportunity and cozied up to her.”

Ruddy took another swallow of his ale, mentally debating the merit of each theory. “I don’t think he lives in the area. If so, he’d have cut through the park more and been seen by the guards. Not sure about the married man having a tryst idea.”

To Ruddy’s way of thinking, if the man was married and looking for a tumble, he’d have met her someplace other than the gardens and at a better hour.

Instinct drew him back to his original sense of the culprit and crime. “I feel like this was a crime of opportunity. I’ve thought it all along and can’t shake the sense.”

“If he was just seeking a victim, then why haven’t you had more murders like this?” Morris asked.

Ruddy downed the rest of his beer and put his tankard on the edge of the table where June would refill it. “Everyone has to start somewhere. She might be number one.”

I was born and raised in Chicago. My father was a history professor and my mother was, and is, a voracious reader. I grew up with a love of history and books.

My parents also love traveling, a passion they passed onto me. I wanted to see the places I read about, see the land and monuments from the time periods that fascinated me. I’ve had the good fortune to travel extensively throughout Europe, the Near East, and North Africa.

I am a retired police detective. I spent twenty-five years in law enforcement with two different agencies. My desire to write came in my early teens. After I retired, I decided to pursue that dream. I write three different series. My paranormal romance series is called, Knights in Time. My romantic thriller series is Dangerous Waters. The newest is The Bloodstone Series. Each series has a different setting and some cross time periods, which I find fun to write.

I currently live in the Pacific Northwest with my husband and four wild and crazy rescue dogs.

Synopsis: London, 1853. Despite Lady Catherine’s love of fencing, she needs to stop pretending to be a boy and fraternizing with men…but not until after the fencing tournament! Her mother plans to marry her off by the end of the season, so this will be her last chance to enjoy her freedom. When she impulsively puts her reputation at risk to save the life of a dashing competitor, all seems lost when he sees through her disguise, but he vows never to reveal her secret. Thank goodness for gentlemanly honor!

Daniel, Marquess of Huntley, wants to overcome the rumors of his father’s madness so that he can be embraced by London society. His plan is to marry the most proper woman who will have him, and then raise stable, respectable children. He certainly isn’t interested in some hoyden with a penchant for masquerading as a boy and flaunting society’s rules. In fact, he’d prefer to keep his distance.

When an obsessed suitor discovers Catherine’s secret and threatens blackmail, the only path out of social ruin is marriage. But what kind of protection does matrimony provide when a vengeful suitor is plotting the ultimate revenge?

EXCERPT – Lady Catherine’s Secret

“You’re walking like a girl.”

In the glow of the gas lanterns outside the fencing academy, Lady Catherine Williams whipped around and scowled at her older brother. She felt the hood of her cloak fall back, but it didn’t matter, since the snug white head covering she wore hid her hair.

“Slouch your shoulders.” Charles’s critical gaze swept over her. “And lengthen your stride.”

She shot him a challenging look and then spit expertly into a pile of icy slush at the edge of the slick cobblestone road.

He closed his eyes and shook his head in mock despair. “Mother would be so proud.”

Catherine chuckled. “Spitting would be the least of my problems if Mother could see me now.”

She hurried up the stone stairs of Bernini’s Academy into its welcoming light with her brother trailing a step behind her. As she stepped through the doorway, contentment enveloped her. She was finally returning to her true home. She grinned at Charles with the sheer joy of the moment.

He shot her a quelling glare.

Mr. Winston, a secretary for the academy, sprang to his feet from behind a tall, gleaming front desk.

“Lord Spencer, how good to see you,” he said in the unctuous tones Catherine always found grating. “And young Master Gray,” he said, turning his gaze toward Catherine, “how wonderful to have you both back in London. If I may say, it’s been much too long since we’ve seen you.”

Catherine always found the small, balding man too effusive for her taste but had to grant that he was good at his job and kept the place running smoothly. She gave him a curt nod.

Winston peered at them through his round, wire-framed spectacles. “I’ll let Maestro Bernini know you’re here. He’ll be quite pleased.” He gave a small bow and departed through the office doorway with mincing footsteps.

“I hate this next part,” Catherine murmured.

“You can always go home,” Charles said. But he didn’t pause as he headed toward the dressing area. He knew her too well to think she’d actually leave.

Catherine followed closely on Charles’s heels and crossed the threshold into the dressing area. Her stomach knotted upon entering this purely male domain. The polished, wood-paneled walls and tall personal storage boxes gleamed from regular applications of lemon oil. The aroma lingered in the air, not quite masking the musky, male scent of perspiration.

She always avoided venturing very far into this particular area and kept her eyes cast down, focusing on the floorboards. This was the only part of her visit she disliked. Long ago, she’d laid claim to a storage box near the entrance, so she didn’t need to go far to gather her fencing gear. With Charles by her side to shield her, she slipped in, snatched up her foil and other items, and then darted back out the door.
